Information:
Long before I began landscape photography Lake Vyrnwy was one of my favourite places to spend a day exploring. The lake lies just outside Snowdonia National Park, amidst the beautiful and remote Berwyn Mountains. The reservoir was established in the 1880’s to supply fresh water to the city of Liverpool and, although it still continues to perform it’s main purpose, it is now also an RSPB nature reserve, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and one of the most beautiful lakes in Wales. When you couple the natural beauty of this area with the neo-gothic Victorian architecture of both the dam and the straining tower then you really start feeling like you’re in the setting of a fairy tale.
Access to the lake and surrounding walks is incredibly easy with a tarmac road running around the lake and a number of free car parks allowing you to explore the dam, lake shore and waterfalls as well giving you access to the RSPB bird hides you’ll find at various locations around the lake. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay nearby then the four star Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa is an ideal choice and provides you with luxurious rooms, great food and spectacular views over the lake.
Whether you’re into landscape photography, wildlife photography or you just feel like exploring one of the most beautiful lakes in Wales then Lake Vyrnwy is definitely a location to add to your list.
Images captured during this video:
Despite enjoying having my Nikon D750 back, I have to say these images certainly aren’t my best, I’ve had some great days and great conditions whilst photographing at Lake Vyrnwy but this was not one of them (you can see the results from some of my good days in my Mountains & Lakes Gallery). However, that’s part of landscape photography and I’ve always said to myself that I wanted to keep my vlogs pretty honest and show the tough days as well as the good ones.
I’m aware that vlogging on YouTube requires you to put a positive spin on pretty much everything that happens but as any landscape photographer knows, the frustrating days usually outnumber the good days and I think it’s important to show that disappointment in a vlog as well, so that anyone taking up landscape photography can see that they’re not alone with the frustrations it can cause!
